Overview

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a by-product of natural gas and crude oil refining, is a colorless, toxic chemical with an odor, heavier than air, and extremely dangerous when exposed to concentrations above 500 ppmv, which can take away life.

All chemical plants that generate hydrogen sulfide during the process are equipped with a Sulfur Recovery Unit (desulfurization facility) that converts H2S into elemental sulfur to minimize the amount of H2S emitted to the atmosphere. 96% of the total, and in the case of a 3-Stage SRU with 3 Clause Reactors, 98% or more can be recovered.

The Reaction Furnace (Thermal Reactor), where the reduction of sulfur actually takes place, requires castable and brick linings with low iron and silica content to withstand the reducing atmosphere. For each component such as Waste Heat Boiler, Thermal Oxidizer, and SRU Stack, stable service life and quality can be obtained only when refractory linings suitable for the process environment and characteristics are installed.
